Xinyi Kuang


Xinyi is a doctoral student in the Centre for Industrial Sustainability (CIS) at the Institute for Manufacturing (IfM), Department of Engineering. She is a member of Hughes Hall, University of Cambridge. Her PhD project is under the supervision of Professor Steve Evans, and fully supported by two advisors, Dr Mukesh Kumar and Dr Lili Jia. She was a junior visiting researcher at Sustainable Innovation Centre of ISQ Institute and at Chalmers University of Technology, funded by TRUST junior researcher exchange program. She is currently working as a part-time Research Associate for circular supply chains projects, at Circular Economy Centre (CEC), Cambridge Judge Business School.


Research Project

Her research studies supply chains with a focus on how Circular Economy might shape the fashion industry, the second largest polluter in the world, for achieving sustainability. This project receives funding from China Scholarship Council. By collaborating with industrial partners from fashion industry on a global scale, the research conducts empirical study to investigate circular business model innovation, circular supply chain design and strategy, and the barriers existing among supply chain players for implementing circular economy, contributing to the conceptual and practical development of CE principles in the clothing sector.

Educational Background

Prior to joining IfM at 2018, Xinyi obtained a MSc in Supply Chain and Logistics Management (SCLM) from WMG, University of Warwick, with an overall mark as 69 (High Merit). Her master dissertation identified the impacts of 3D Printing as a disruptive technology on supply chain sustainability, with a combined method of questionnaire and Structural Equation Model (SEM). She also holds a BEng degree in Air Transportation from Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics(NUAA), where her final thesis studied inventory optimization of spare parts for Spring Airlines.


Industrial Background

Whilst her industrial experience has been driven by her strong interest in exploring the operation management knowledge from each link of the value chain. From upstream to downstream, she worked as a supply chain planner in Tesco international sourcing office to learn the purchasing and manufacturing functions, as a dispatching trainee in BSH Group to understand dispatching and distribution functions, as an intern in DB Schenker to understand the transportation function, as an In-store logistics Young Potential in IKEA group to study the in-store logistics and warehousing functions, and as a customer service representative at SF Express to learn the basics of customer service.
