Oshadhi Herath
Visiting Ph.D Researcher
Oshadhi Herath is a multidisciplinary researcher who joined the Institute for Manufacturing (IfM), University of Cambridge, in May 2026 as a Visiting PhD Student under the supervision of Prof Mukesh Kumar in the Industrial Resilience Research Group (IRRG), contributing to the UK–Japan Critical Mineral Supply Chain Observatory.
He is pursuing his PhD at Nagaoka University of Technology, Japan, under the supervision of Professor Tadachika Nakayama, and is a recipient of a research fellowship from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) as a young scientist.
He graduated with First Class Honours in Transport and Logistics from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, and is a Graduate Chemist of the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon, with professional recognition from the Royal Society of Chemistry. He has also gained research exposure through engagements with MIT Media Lab and Harvard University.
His interdisciplinary research integrates hyperspectral remote sensing, artificial intelligence (AI), critical mineral exploration, climate impact monitoring, computational chemistry, and industrial resilience. He leverages advanced Earth-observation data from spaceborne hyperspectral missions, including EnMAP, PRISMA, EMIT, and HISUI developed through international space agencies and programmes such as Germany’s DLR, Italy’s ASI, NASA, and Japan’s JAXA. His research explores AI-driven approaches to rare earth element detection and mineral prospectivity mapping, alongside applications in climate and environmental monitoring, snow-region road and traffic vulnerability assessment, water-quality analysis, and soil-health monitoring. Complementing these capabilities, he investigates AI-enabled mineral processing and refining, computational chemistry, and molecular-level optimisation to advance scientific understanding of rare earth extraction and separation processes.
His broader research interests include critical mineral supply-chain intelligence, transport systems, and emerging digital technologies, including metaverse and digital twin applications. He is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and currently serves as a Lecturer at the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka.
