Dr Christopher Keith (Sam) Beale

RAEng Visiting Professor

Sam graduated in 1973 from Durham University and joined Rolls-Royce plc at Derby in 1978 after 4 years in motor racing with March Engineering Ltd.  After initial familiarisation, he became Assistant Chief Design Engineer on the V2500 engine, before transferring to the Bristol site in 1986 to head up the Systems and Transmissions Department.  From 1988, he was Chief Design Engineer progressively of the Pegasus, Trent 800, RB199 and EJ200 engine design teams.  Sam became Chief Engineer - Helicopter Engines in 1995 and Chief Engineer - Research & Technology in 1998.  Sam was appointed Head of Technology Strategy for Rolls-Royce plc in December 2007.


He was a member of the LGFCS (initially RRFCS) Technical Advisory Board from 2008 to 2015, and was a Rolls-Royce Pension Fund Trustee from 2003 to 2016.


Sam retired from Rolls-Royce in April 2012 and was thereupon appointed a RAEng Visiting Professor in Innovation at Cambridge on a 4 year contract. He was appointed a Vice-President of the Rolls-Royce Heritage Trust, Bristol Branch, in September 2012 and became an engineering consultant to Reaction Engines Ltd in October 2015. In 2016, Sam was appointed as a Visitor to Cambridge’s Whittle Laboratory so that he can contribute to the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Gas Turbine Aerodynamics, and as a Member of Ceres Power Holdings plc’s Technical Advisory Board.


He was a member of Clifton College Council, on whose behalf he was Chairman of the Audit, Finance & General Purposes Committee, having previously performed the role of Chairman of Clifton College Sports Centre Ltd, the College’s trading subsidiary.


He is married with 4 children and 6 grandchildren.
