Cassi Henderson

PhD Student

Cassi is a joint student of the Analytical Biotechnology group in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology and the Fluids in Advanced Manufacturing group, under the supervision of Dr Lisa Hall and Dr Ronan Daly. Her doctoral research investigates the use of synthetic biology and low-cost materials to circumvent the classical distribution chain for biosensors in low-resource settings by enabling a complete production pathway amenable to in-country manufacture. Her work focuses on the integration of functional materials, assay development and manufacturing design to enable biosensors to be produced for affordable, rapid, and point-of-care detection of diseases. Outside her academic commitments, Cassi organizes outreach events for girls aimed at showing them the breadth and creativity of the scientific disciplines and encouraging them to consider careers in STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) fields. Prior to starting her PhD, Cassi received her BSE in Bioengineering from the University of Pennsylvania and completed a Masters in Bioscience Enterprise at the University of Cambridge, focusing on the commercialization of early stage medical technologies.
